So much is going on, it’s difficult to know where to start this week except to say that we’re about to have adults running the Federal government for the first time in four years in just a matter of days! I would like to say that we’ve turned the page on Donald Trump, but this isn’t the case quite yet considering the hammer of justice is about to come down on him after he’s no longer the acting resident at 12:01 pm Wednesday, not to mention that he still has three days left to screw the country over more than he already has.
This past Tuesday-Wednesday’s New Moon in Capricorn landed on conspiratorial Pluto, coinciding with a growing certainty that the attempted coup on the Capitol Building had help from the inside while the lack of preparation, despite glaring alarms days in advance, also pointed to more nefarious supporters of the seditious resident and his desperate claims of a stolen election. I would suspect that we’ll learn a great deal more by the time we reach the Leo Full Moon on Jan. 28.
Past and current astrological signatures appear to track closely with news reports of the growing threat of further acts of insurrection, especially in the days surrounding the Inauguration of Joe Biden. The most immediate indicators appear to involve Jupiter, Uranus and Mars as they form hard aspects to one another all this week with the most extreme inflection point occurring on Inauguration Day itself when Mars joins Uranus in Taurus. This suggests the potential for amplified (Jupiter) violence (Mars) and uprisings (Uranus), fueled by radical (Uranus) ideological (Jupiter) impulses (Mars).
Since the domestic terrorist attacks on the Capitol - by half-wits who have provided direct, incriminating evidence of their involvement - security has been beefed up enough to turn the area around the National Mall into a Green Zone with up to 20,000 armed National Guard troops, Secret Service, FBI and police officers from around the country protecting Biden and Harris. What is unclear are the threats to state capitols and infrastructure in the face of American extremists, but this remains to be seen right now. All I can say is that we need to tread carefully while taking nothing for granted this week and next.
The Inauguration Chart
On Jan. 20 at 12:00 pm, Joe Biden will take the Oath of Office in Washington, D.C. which will mark the beginning of his administration. An astrological chart drawn up for that moment offers clues as to what might be expected from his administration over the next four years. Although this chart deserves a deeper, more comprehensive analysis, I will touch on a few of the more critical components of this chart right now. It’s important to note that this quick overview and my speculations as to how it will manifest are subject to change given the huge amount of uncertainty in the air (Mars-Uranus).
The first thing we see in the Biden Inauguration Chart (BIC) is that all of the planets are bundled together in the final third of the chart (Houses 9 through 12 - the so-called “universal houses”), indicating the focus will be on a more objective approach to the issues surrounding the country instead of Biden’s own self-interests. This is “other directed” with the focus on international relations (9th house); business and the economy (10th house); social inequalities and small-D democratic values (11th house) and the pandemic (12th house).
It should come as no surprise that Biden’s presidency might be plagued by unrest, the threat of violence and the challenges of containing the Covid-19 pandemic that was encouraged to fester and grow under the Trump administration. This is indicated by the fact that the Moon will be located at the final, overheated degree of Aries (29Ari03) which also happens to be the same location that Mars occupied on Jan. 6. The Moon in the BIC is void-of-course, something I’m unclear about as ANY change in leadership from what we’ve experienced with the outgoing will have a notable, positive impact. I suspect this will be something that will need to be looked at closer in the future.
The Sun (chief executive) is conjunct Saturn (restrictions, limitations), confirming what we already know, that his first term in office will not be easy by any account. Sun-Saturn suggests impositions and impasses presented by conservative elements while the sheer weight of crises set in motion during the four years of mismanagement and malfeasance of the Trump administration will be a further drag on Biden's ambitious agenda. It is fortunate that he has a narrow majority in the House and Senate at his back, but still.
Speaking of inheritances from his predecessor, another factor involves a 45-degree (semisquare) aspect between Saturn (structures, limitations) and Neptune (lies, conspiracies, sabotage) which may involve the booby-traps and land-mines laid by the Trump administration on their way out the door. How this will manifest remains to be seen, but again, such things should come as no surprise to anyone paying attention.
These features are underscored by the Mars-Uranus conjunction in Taurus embedded in this chart, within range of the Aries Moon in the 12th house of contagions and hidden enemies as well as compassion and selflessness. There are a couple ways this can go: one is that there will be certain dangers to confront during his four years in office, not least of which is the festering of white, domestic terrorism that will only grow once Trump is out of office and becomes a martyr to the cause as he’s prosecuted and convicted of multiple crimes.
The other, more positive expression involves unprecedented (Uranus) action (Mars) and radical (Uranus) deployments (Mars) to contain the pandemic and move the country out of the deep ditch it's been driven into. No tepid, half-way measures will be able to provide the course correction the United States desperately needs. Because Mars-Uranus-Moon are in the 12th house, we should expect much of what takes place will largely occur behind the scenes, while the square aspects to Jupiter-Saturn in the 10th house will see resistance from entrenched special interests and corporate status-quo (opposed to raising taxes on the very rich). Best case is that these same entities will provide major assistance beyond what’s required of them, but this might be a stretch
Pluto sits at the Midheaven of the BIC, which speaks to transformative power guiding this administration as well as some of the dangers involved with the job. Considering the fact that Biden is taking the helm amidst a deadly pandemic that will kill a half-million Americans before he completes his first 100 days in office, attempts to control the deadly side of Pluto may become the overarching goal of his administration. Darker still, threats on the life of President Biden cannot be ruled out given the violent mentality of domestic terrorists and their unreasonable hatred against him.
There are other matters that need to be discussed, but I first need to find time to perform a deeper analysis while I also want to confer with some of my fellow-astrologers to see if my reading of the chart is in concurrence with theirs as I suspect I might be missing something critical. This again is only a first glance and for now I choose to be hopeful that the Inauguration will be smooth and that the clean-up crews swarming the White House remember to bring a truck loaded with sage.
The Week Ahead
On a more immediate, personal level, this week’s astrological signatures are definitely volatile with the potential for surprises and accidents as indicated by the Mars-Jupiter-Uranus combo pack. Even so, this can also signal the need for bold, creative action and with the Moon now in its first waxing phase of the New Year, an ideal time to go big.
Mercury just entered its retrograde shadow ahead of turning retrograde on Jan. 30 in Aquarius, a suggestion that much of what we’re hearing, thinking, discussing and reflecting upon will be unavoidable themes until mid-March. The next two weeks would also be a good time to take care of any important Mercury-related business in the way of contract signings, critical mailings, major online ordering, car repairs, tech purchases and software installations.
Above all, keep your vibration high while extending protective light over the incoming administration as we move through this volatile period of human history. Hard as it might be to conceptualize, the lights are coming on, providing greater illumination and contrast to the dark shadows which have festered in silence for a long, long time. The moment of our collective awakening is at hand!
Lunar Gardening Report
Sunday is an excellent day for all manner of planting, transplanting, sprouting, repotting, fertilizing and cutting to encourage growth under the strongly-waxing Pisces Moon. Monday into early afternoon Wednesday sees the Moon making tracks through Aries, favoring cutting and clearing stuff you don’t want to see grow back too fast as well as weeding and pest control. Planting and feeding are back on the menu early afternoon Wednesday through Friday as the Moon occupies Taurus; particularly favorable for root crops and soil amendments. Saturday and Sunday would be good days to take a break from most gardening activities with the Moon in agriculturally-barren Gemini while looking to early the following week for excellent planting and fertilizing conditions.
Daily Forecast (For all signs)
(Times are Eastern Standard/-0500UTC)
Sunday, Jan. 17: The Pisces Moon lends a dreamy, if not sleepy tone to the day with an emphasis on a more selfless and compassionate spin on things in our personal lives. The potential for imaginative breakthroughs are also possible, yet with the threat of ideologically-induced violence a strong possibility, the level of volatility continues to approach extreme levels (Jupiter square Uranus). We should consider this aspect to be a precursor to a more intense planetary combination building ahead of and including Wednesday’s Inauguration. The waxing Crescent Moon in Pisces favors mediation, contemplation and prayers for the safety of the United States and its people.
Monday, Jan. 18: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This is a day traditionally given to volunteer work and a focus on how diversity and unity can accomplish many things. The waxing Aries Moon is an action-based lunar placement that can be directed into constructive projects (sextile Saturn) with an emphasis on health and healing in the face of the pandemic (conjunct Chiron) and an expansive sense of accomplishment (sextile Jupiter). The darker expression of these lunar contacts are likely to find default expression through acts of violence and the tragedy of the unchecked spread of Covid-19.
Tuesday, Jan. 19: Communication is ramped-up considerably ahead of tomorrow’s Inauguration of Joe Biden and the bitter end of Trump’s four-year reign of terror with the Aries Moon aspecting Mercury at noon. The Sun says goodbye to Capricorn as it crosses the cusp into Aquarius later this afternoon where the focus is placed on matters involving the social contract over the coming month. Happy Birthday, Aquarians! Considering the Sun is also crossing the location of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction from a month ago, there is some form of illumination taking place at this time with regard to the larger cycle we’ve just entered into. Watch for rumblings ahead of tomorrow’s highly inflammatory contact.
Wednesday, Jan. 20: Inauguration Day. At last! As we get things started, know that the Moon will be VOC in Aries until entering Taurus at 1:56 pm when a more grounded, less heated tone asserts itself. Unfortunately, there is a rather dangerous aspect taking place today with one of the more explosive aspects in astrology taking place when Mars joins Uranus in Taurus. Considering the warnings which have been circulating ahead of the Inauguration of right-wing violence at the nation’s Capital and across the country, Mars-Uranus is gravely concerning. Even with 20,000 National Guard troops deployed in Washington, D.C., we need to be very concerned for the safety of our elected officials everywhere. Visualize a protective presence around President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as they are sworn-in to lead the United States out of this time of darkness and division at the stroke of noon. The Taurus Moon will enter its First Quarter Phase at 4:00 pm, denoting a period of readjustment even as the Moon’s square aspect to Saturn later tonight points to the hard work that lies ahead.
Thursday, Jan. 21: The Moon joins yesterday’s Mars-Uranus conjunction in the predawn hours, suggesting some form of revisitation of whatever extremes might have been present yesterday although it's unlikely to impact us personally for the obvious reason that we’re asleep. One of the more harmonious lunar aspects with Venus takes place around noon, pointing to an ideal time to have lunch with a friend - if that’s something we can still do. In a more general way, this points to a giant sigh of relief that the nation is now in the hands of competent adults.
Friday, Jan. 22: Dodgy communication is possible this morning with the potential for traffic snarls and glitches leading the way with the Taurus Moon taking-on Mercury. Effective displays of power, particularly with regard to money and other practicalities are evident in the late afternoon while the potential for another violent display grows strong later tonight into tomorrow morning (Mars square Jupiter). I suspect this might have something to do with right wing extremists exercising their Second Amendment rights (Jupiter) to shoot people (Mars) they disagree with in the name of freedom (Jupiter).
Saturday, Jan. 23: The Moon enters Gemini today, denoting a busy day in the way of phone calls, Zoom meetings, errands, mailings, headlines and non-stop nattering. It’s perhaps useful to point out that Gemini’s ruling planet, Mercury will station retrograde one week from today, so it would be good to start planning for it by taking care of any pressing Mercury-related business ahead of time. The overnight aspect between Mars and Jupiter could spill over into the day with heated exchanges and violent developments among the deranged remnants. Creative, artistic expression is strongly accentuated this afternoon even as a far more serious aspect perfects later tonight when the Sun makes its annual conjunction to Saturn, opening a new cycle focused on structure, responsibility, accountability and consequence. A fitting way to wrap up one of the more consequential weeks of American history while we move boldly into the future.
