“One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.” -- William Shakespeare
Spring has had a hard time getting out of the gate here in the Midwest, running about two or three weeks behind its usual emergence. Yet it would appear as though this coming week will see a complete transformation of the natural landscape as blossoms pop against a backdrop of soft green explosions
In the seasonal calendar, we’ve reached the cross-quarter celebration of Beltane, the pagan/Wiccan sabbat honoring the Great Mother and the invisible realms of fertility that nourish us all. As Beltane runs from May 1 - August 2, it marks the season of summer, where daylight grows to its culmination and the life force surges as we take another step on the road that leads to the blazing bonfire of Midsummer.
Scorpio Full Moon
The solar-lunar cycle which began two weeks ago at the Aries New Moon reaches its culmination with the Full Moon, illuminating the tenth degree of Scorpio and Taurus (09Sco/Tau39) on Sunday night at 8:58 pm (Eastern Time), opening into the deep emotional realms where the desire for true intimacy and authenticity feels more pressing than is usually the case. Reflected in this Scorpio-Taurus polarity, the subconscious mind intersects with the conscious mind to make manifest our true heart's desires, or the ego’s imagined fears. Change is already in the air with notable turns ahead in our personal lives, buffeted by the shifting winds of the collective mind.
Looking at the chart for the Scorpio Full Moon, we find it the Sun-Moon opposition forming a Grand Cross configuration with the Moon’s North Node-South Node axis, activating Taurus, Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius, all four of the fixed zodiac signs. As the term “fixed” suggests, these are the signs most resistant to change, suggesting difficulties in adjusting to new conditions or where change occurs abruptly, and only after relentless pressure to do so…
Strong emotional content is rolled into this Full Moon with the potential for prickly and defensive behaviors, particularly if feelings of insecurity and vulnerability are being raised. Passion and intimacy are also highlighted yet need to be softened in light of the amount of fire and rough edges displayed in the Full Moon chart. In other words, be gentle with one another as a little TLC can go a long way to soothe the frayed ends and foster a sense of comfort and safety amidst the constant shifting landscape that’s almost beginning to seem normal.
Mercury Exits the Shadowlands
Speaking of getting back to “normal,” Mercury finally leaves the retrograde shadow it’s been under since the first week of March, breaking new ground in the realms of communication and transportation on Friday, May 4. While Mercury was wearing a path in Aries (05-17 degrees Aries), we were getting a barrage of reports that seemed to go around in circles, but now it's possible that we’ll gain a clearer image of what’s really unfolding.
As for the practical side, Mercury crossing new territory is excellent for making new plans and arranging fresh strategies for stuff to happen with an economy of effort. With the Moon entering its Last Quarter Phase three days after Mercury emerges from out of its retrograde shadow it would be best to stick with planning and wait until after the Taurus New Moon opens a new cycle on May 16 to pull the trigger.
Lunar Gardening Report
Although there is a chance that Sunday night’s Full Moon in Scorpio may be a little too fertile, I wouldn’t let it stop me from doing some planting, especially if local conditions have set planting back by a few weeks. So yeah, Sunday through late morning Tuesday are ideal for planting just about anything as well as using compost and manure for enriching soil. This all comes to a full stop after 11:20 am Tuesday when the Moon enters the fire sign of Sagittarius and the focus shifts to cutting, clearing, weeding and pest control through Thursday. Some of the last best days for planting during the current solar-lunar cycle take place Friday through Sunday morning when the Moon makes its way through Capricorn, excellent for planting tubers or anything requiring strong root development also a good time for adding soil amendments. After this, the Moon will go into closure mode with the next best dates for planting May 17-18.
Daily Forecast (For all signs)
(Times are Eastern Daylight/-0040UTC)
Sunday, April 29: Adding to any late-week extremes associated with Thursday’s Mars-Pluto conjunction, we approach tonight’s Scorpio Full Moon with growing sense of intensity and trepidation. Fortunately, the day commences with considerable sanity and grounding via an earth-sign configuration known for mature deliberation and practical evaluation (Sun in Taurus trine Saturn in Capricorn). Of course, this could also suggest an impasse or energy blockage, but considering the amount of sheer volatility reflected in recent geocosmic signatures, this may come as a welcome relief. The Full Moon becomes exact at 8:58 pm, illuminating the first decan of Scorpio and Taurus (09Sco/Tau37), placing the polarity in the realm of personal and shared resources, assets, debts as well as matters pertaining to love, sex and death. Emotions may be riding close to the surface with some folks becoming more prickly than usual, so use common sense in all interactions.
Monday, April 30: Walpurgis/Beltane Eve. Last night’s Scorpio Full Moon continues to charge the air today although there’s a pronounced lack of troubling aspects to contend with. Daydreaming may or may not interfere with getting some actual work done first thing this morning while the door to a potential opportunity may open briefly, mid-afternoon. Even under the best conditions, there could be tendency to brood or experience feelings of pessimism tonight, perhaps in connection with last week’s developments. But hey, never mind all of that, there is true magick in the air tonight for those of you who are sensitive to such things.
Tuesday, May 1: Beltane. Summer, as measured in the seasonal calendar, begins to today for those of you living in the Northern Hemisphere with Midsummer about six weeks away. If you’re not dancing ‘round the Maypole or rolling naked in the fields, you’ll want to watch what agreements, decisions and appointments you form this morning with the Moon VOC in Scorpio until entering Sagittarius at 11:20 am. This might result in the feeling that things are lighten-up considerably with people starting to joke around more; the bright fires of the Sagittarius Moon clearing away whatever still lurks in the shadow of Sunday’s Full Moon in Scorpio. Keep it light, the other default of the Sagittarius Moon is ideological intolerance, indelicate speech and ham-handed attempts at diplomacy. Even a sense of humor and a bag of jokes may not be enough to overcome an uncomfortable social or relationship situation tonight; we’re asked to remain present in any case (Venus quincunx Saturn).
Wednesday, May 2: Most of the day appears free and clear of cumbersome aspects interfering with business as usual under the Sagittarius Moon. Communication flows freely later this afternoon although there is some potential for misunderstandings or misdirections shortly after 6:00 pm. This would be a good night for lighthearted fun and perhaps an adventure off the beaten path.
Thursday, May 3: Another expansive day in store and a good time to put the pedal to the metal with regard to projects and plans already in the works with an unobstructed Sagittarius Moon. Make hay while the sun shines, they say; with the Moon waning ahead of Monday’s Last Quarter Moon, the clock is ticking on getting your plans out the gate. A more sober tone will begin to dominate after the Moon enters the sign of Capricorn just after 10:00 pm and we find greater focus on the notions of duty and responsibility as we head into the weekend.
Friday, May 4: The Capricorn Moon lends itself to greater levels of productivity as well as a no-nonsense approach to business, so wipe that silly grin off your face and get to work! After having paced back and forth over the same chunk of overcooked zodiacal real estate in Aries for the past two months, Mercury finally exits its retrograde shadow, breaking new ground for the first time since March 8. The process of review and redundancy are at an end while new ideas and fresh interests beckon us to begin drawing-up plans for better launch conditions mid-month. The only possible fly in today’s jar of ointment arises late afternoon when someone’s being called to account for actions taken or words spoken when the Moon joins Saturn. Look for them.
Saturday, May 5: Cinco de Mayo. Although the Capricorn Moon may try to rain on your parade, don’t let it stand between you and another shot of tequila! Seriously, choose your words carefully this morning as there is a tendency to offer too much unnecessary information, gumming up the works of communication and casting doubt on the reliability of news sources (Mercury quincunx Jupiter). A very festive lunar alignment takes form midday and lasts through the night when the Moon makes contacts with both Mercury and Jupiter, encouraging upbeat parties and other social events. Ole!
